THIRD CIRCULAR LETTER

The University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) of Dakar, and Institut Fondamental d’Afrique Noire Cheikh Anta Diop (IFAN-CAD), confirm the joint organization of the 13th PAA Congress (PanAfrican Archaeological Association and Related Studies), and the 20th conference of the SAFA (Society of Africanist Archaeologists).

Deadline for abstract submission and registration
The deadline for abstract submission and registration, that was initially scheduled for April 30, 2010, has been postponed until June 30, 2010.

Congress Duration
The duration of PAA/SAFA meeting is seven days from November 1st to 7th 2010 but the academic programme will last only four days. The last three days will be dedicated to the excursions and participants departure.

Conference Venue
The conference venue is UCAD II in the campus of the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar.

Themes
Several topics in African archaeology will be discussed but a particular emphasis will be put on “the Preservation of African Cultural Heritage”. There are four major topics including:
1) The Archaeological Record of the African Continent from Early Hominid to the Recent Past;
2) Method, Theory and Practices: Challenges and Opportunities for African Archaeology in the 21st century;
3) Managing heritage in Africa;
4) The Archaeology of African Diasporas in continental connexions.

However, there are additional panel proposals from individual participants that will be announced later in our website.
Plenary Session
One plenary session will be organized during the opening session. Four or five keynotes speakers who are experts in the field will discuss and provoke debate on issues critical to African archaeology in the 21st century and beyond.

Parallel Sessions Presentations
The program includes several panels. Each panel is composed of several parallel sessions. The duration of each session will be two hours. Every session will include a chairperson and a maximum of six panellists. Each presentation will last fifteenth minutes (15mn). The remaining time will be devoted to discussions to allow the audience to interact directly with panellists.

Poster Presentations
Posters will be presented in an area designated for this purpose. The audience is encouraged to circulate to discuss with the authors.
